When we had the chance to go on the track to learn about how the surface was grooved I also had an oppourtunity to see the Safer Barrier up close. Here is the view from where we stood as you look into the corner.

IMS On track surface & tire debris

Posted in Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pics taken by me, Speedway Daily, Video with tags , , on June 18, 2009 by davethekingwilson

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 the media had an opportunity to learn the definitions of several racing terms which have been in the news lately. Tire dust, marbles, Diamond Grinding of track surface, are the 3 that are focused on today. The photos below show (L to R) a section of the IMS track surface in turn 1. On the left is a diamond grooved area and on the right is untouched. A larger version of this photo is at the bottom of this post. Center, Kevin Forbes holds one of the blades used to level the track. Top right the tire dust, like we saw at last years Brickyard 400, lying on the track. Bottom left, marbles lying on the track. Bottom center I tried to get as good a picture, up close of the ground surface as my camera will allow. Bottom right an example of both tire dust(L) and marbles(R) in containers.

Kevin Forbes is the IMS Director of Engineering and Construction and Dan Edwards is the IMS Manager of Track Racing Operations. Ron Green is the Director of Media Relations.

In this picture, you can see the difference from the grooved portion of track(on left) and an un grooved part of the track( on right)
